This page explains the standard every calculator is held to, so you can judge the method for yourself rather than trusting a number on faith. It applies across all categories — finance, tax, business, health, math, real estate, ecommerce, education, and unit conversion.
1. Input clarity
Every input is given a plain label, a unit where one applies, and a short helper note when the meaning could be ambiguous. Where a field expects a specific basis — for example annual versus monthly, gross versus net, or area in square feet versus square metres — we state it next to the field. Sensible default values are pre-filled so the tool produces a meaningful result the moment the page loads.
2. Formula transparency
Each calculator is built around a documented formula based on authoritative references or standard, widely accepted conventions. The formula is shown on the page so you can see exactly how inputs become a result. We do not hide the method behind vague claims, and calculator outputs are never adjusted to favour any product, lender, or advertiser.
3. Worked example
Every flagship calculator includes at least one worked example using realistic, clearly labelled numbers, with the intermediate steps shown. Examples are checked against the calculator's own formula before publication, so the example and the live tool agree.
4. Rounding
Money results are generally shown to two decimal places; rates and ratios to a small, sensible number of decimals. Internal calculations are performed at full floating-point precision and rounded only for display, so a result you see may differ by a rounding unit from a hand calculation that rounds at each step. Very large or very small scientific values are shown in scientific notation rather than as a misleading string of zeros.
5. Assumptions
Real-world outcomes depend on details a single tool cannot capture, so we state the key assumptions a calculator makes — for example a constant interest rate, a standard 365-day year, or expenses excluding tax. Reading the assumptions tells you when a result will closely match reality and when it is a simplified estimate.
6. Limitations
Each calculator lists what it does not account for, such as fees, local rules, taxes, market volatility, or individual circumstances. Limitations are stated honestly so a result is never mistaken for a guarantee or a personalised recommendation.
7. Sources and references
Where a result depends on a factual standard — a formula, a physical constant, a tax rule, a health range, or a financial convention — we cite primary or authoritative sources in a "Sources & References" section and link to them directly. Examples include the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the IRS for finance and tax in the United States, GOV.UK for UK rules, the CDC and WHO for health ranges, and NIST and IUPAC for scientific constants. We do not cite low-quality or anonymous blogs as authorities. Because rates and rules change, tax and rate-based tools carry a "last reviewed" note and point you to the official source for the current figure.
8. Result interpretation
A number on its own is rarely enough, so calculator pages explain what the result means, how to read it, and the common mistakes people make when acting on it. The goal is understanding, not just an answer.
9. Related calculators
Each tool links to related calculators and to its parent category, so you can move from a quick estimate to a fuller analysis — for example from a loan payment to an amortisation schedule, or from a cap rate to a full cash-flow view.
10. Downloadable spreadsheets
Where a calculator offers a spreadsheet download, the file is generated from the same inputs and formula shown on the page, so the downloaded numbers match what you see. Download buttons are only shown on calculators that actually provide a file — we do not display a download control that leads nowhere.
